I’m experimenting with introducing Legacy Items in the campaign – I’ll be writing them up here for both player and general information.
What Are Legacy Items?
In brief, the idea is to have items of power that become a signature item of a player – associated with their growing legend and status – so sort of magical items that level up with the players. Different powers unlock at different levels, and are sometimes accompanied by a penalty to skills or hitpoints as a price of that unlock to balance things out. At certain levels, a ritual may be required, and I’m engaging the players in designing these as adventure hooks as we go along.
As I’m taking the path of these adventurers founding legacy items, I’m tending to tie the power ups to significant events as we go along – as much because I’m not keeping up to speed with actually writing them up in the rush to complete the actual adventure…
